Hungarian Gripen in the air after seven years

24.02.2017, 08:10

The JAS-39 Gripen aircraft is a frequent guest at the NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days, most of the time however just at static display. Only at its first participation event’s visitors could see it in flight, but now it will repeat the flying display after seven years.

Hungary belongs together with Sweden and the Czech Republic among the only European operators of the Gripens and it operates them under lease from Sweden.

„Gripens are well known to visitors of our event, thanks to both Czech and Hungarian Air Force. But we still suppose they will appreciate an opportunity to see again the flying display of the Hungarian aircraft, especially when there will be also a chance to compare it with the Czech one,” says Zbyněk Pavlačík, Chairman of Jagello 2000. “And we don’t see why it should not happen.”

The JAS-39 Gripen is a light single-engine multi-role fighter aircraft, which is the latest model of the Saab Company as the Saab 37 Viggen can be considered as its direct predecessor. It has a great manoeuvrability and requires only a short runway thanks to the delta-wing and canard configuration. It presents this properties at its displays.

Hungary as well as the Czech Republic has leased 14 aircraft from Sweden, 12 single-seaters and two twin-seater trainers. It lost one of each kind at two separate incidents in 2015, but those were replaced, when Hungary signed additional agreement with Sweden. And also similarly as the Czech Republic, the original lease was extended, so the Gripens will serve in Hungarian Air Force at least till 2026.
