This year's XVIII. NATO Days in Ostrava & IX. Czech Air Force Days taking place at Leoš Janáček Ostrava Airport and dedicated to commemorating of the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia, has confirmed its position being the biggest security show in Europe. The Sunday part of the weekend programme was seen by 125,000 visitors, which, including Saturday, represents a total of 220,000 spectators.

Thanks to a joint effort of all engaged services and partners, this year’s NATO Days represented a dignified celebration of the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia and ended with a symbolic drop of poppies carried by the OV-10 Bronco aircraft, which thus repeated its two previous displays being a part of the exceptional historical flypast.

During 16 hours, the weekend programme provided over 40 dynamic displays both in the air and on the ground. Visitors had the opportunity to see approximately 100 pieces of aircraft and helicopters and over 500 pieces of ground forces equipment, the one that had secured the whole show included. For example, the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic, which take care of the main logistical aspects of the event, used up to 330 vehicles of all kinds.

At this year’s NATO Days, twenty participants showed their capabilities and equipment in both dynamic and static displays, including a debut of Croatia and its Wings of Storm aerobatic team. The United States, which took over the Special Partner Nation this year, presented besides aircraft and helicopters premiere armoured vehicles. Ground forces equipment was also showed by two other foreign participants, Germany and Poland.

The weekend programme was also enriched by historical elements as there was a significant space dedicated to historical military equipment and its replicas thanks to cooperation with the Silesian Museum. These pieces alongside with the most modern equipment thus illustrated the technological progress which Czechoslovak and later on Czech Armed Forces have undergone in the last 100 years. Partners of the event, ŠKODA AUTO and TATRA TRUCKS, largely contributed to this preview with their own historical expositions as well.

Although Friday’s planned arrivals and rehearsals had to deal with a heavy rain, which also appeared at Mošnov Airport on Saturday morning, pleasant summer weather remained for both days of the weekend show. Visitors also filled empty grass areas in the venue and often comfortably watched the programme sitting on blankets. Thanks to organizers, partners and all who contributed to programme, its logistics or other services, visitors could have left the biggest security show in Europe with unforgettable experience.
