Record show attracts 130,000 visitors

18.09.2016, 18:14

As many as 85,000 people visited the second day of the NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days 2016, the biggest security show in Europe. Combined with the Saturday crowd of 45,000 in rainy weather, a total of 130,000 spectators came to see the show. History was made with numerous attractive displays as the Frecce Tricolori were voted the best dynamic display by the visitors.

The Italian Air Force Aerobatic team was awarded the Ostrava Mayor Award for best dynamic display, presented for the very first time. The ten Aermacchi MB-339 aircraft split into a 9-ship group and a solo aircraft, with performance underlined by red, white and green smoke effects. Making its last public display was the German Army Bo-105 helicopter, the only of this type capable of making aerobatic figures. In a unique gathering at Ostrava, the Eurofighter Typhoon demo teams from all its five European Air Force operators displayed the type’s capabilities. Further spectacular displays included the Rafale of the French Air Force or four generations of Swedish jet fighters ranging from the J-29 “Flying Barrel” to the Czech Air Force’s JAS-39 Gripen.

There was plenty to see on the static park as well, starting with the premiere participation at NATO Days of the B-1B bomber, accompanied by a B-52. Prior to coming to Ostrava, both US Air Force strategic bombers took part in the international Ample Strike exercise in the Czech Republic. Germany, as the 2016 Special Partner Nation, offered an unprecedented scope of dynamic and static displays that included the premiere presentation of the new A-400M cargo aircraft as well as the Leopard 2 main battle tank.

For the second year in a row, elite Jordanian Armed Forces Female Company for Special Security Tasks presented their capabilities, this time in a joint aircraft hostage-rescue demonstration with the Czech Police. Reviving the spirit of history was the Czechoslovak LT Mk. 38 tank from the pre WWII era.

The record-breaking participation by 20 nations + NATO translated also in the most packed programme. “The 2016 NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days really offered our visitors an unforgettable spectacle, many first-times and record numbers. We are pleased that we can offer something new each year,” comments Zbyněk Pavlačík, head of Jagello 2000, main organizing agency. “I would like to express our thanks to each and every individual that took part in the organisation. Without a concerted effort we would not be able to achieve the single most important priority – a safe and secure conduct of the show for the visitors and participants alike.”
