Three F-16 demo teams to meet, Solotürk confirmed

23.05.2016, 14:29

As many as three demonstration teams flying on the F-16 jets will be entertaining the 2016 NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days crowd at the Leoš Janáček Ostrava Airport. Following its Belgian and Greek counterparts, the Turkish Air Force Solotürk Display Team has also confirmed its participation.

The Solotürk is returning to Ostrava after four years, after it made its Central European debut here in 2012 when also the Royal Netherlands Air Force F-16 Demo Team participated.

“The US F-16 fighter is a widely used aircraft around the world. Thanks to its high manoeuvrability, many air forces make it their No. 1 choice for their supersonic aircraft solo display teams. It is then common that multiple nations’ F-16 demo teams meet at one airshow. NATO Days has enjoyed three F-16 teams in 2014 – the Dutch, the Danish and the Greek one. Regular visitors are already aware of the different types of manoeuvre displays presented by each of the air forces’ display pilots. It will be no different this year,” comments Zbyněk Pavlačík, head of Jagello 2000.

Turkish Air Force operates as many as 240 F-16s. This number makes it the third largest user of the jet after the U.S, and Israel. Turkey still intends to purchase 30 additional F-16s. The Solotürk Demo Team was established in 2010 and is thus one of the “younger” teams. Its F-16C Block 40 aircraft is adorned in impressive black and golden livery featuring the crescent motive and an eagle, the Turkish national symbol. This specific display aircraft has no further modifications so it could be used in real operations as well. The display pilot is Cpt. Erhan Günar and is also the team’s first pilot.

Turkey is already the 13th country to commit its forces for participation at 2016 NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days. The Solotürk becomes the 6th supersonic jet demo team this year complementing the already mentioned Belgian and Greek F-16 demo teams, the Austrian and Italian Eurofighter Typhoon demo teams and the Swiss F-18 Hornet demo team.
