It excels in rapid deployment, what is made possible also by a pair of Makila 1A1 turboshaft engines, each producing 1,357 kW. It features reinforced fuel tank protection and a collision avoidance system. The pilots' field of view is extended by observation domes on both sides of the helicopter, with additional electro-optical systems assisting in low-light conditions. In combat scenarios, the crew can utilise two rapid-fire machine guns mounted on either side of the fuselage, 68 mm rocket launchers, and 20 mm cannons.

The ammunition options vary across different versions of the aircraft. The naval AS532 SC, used exclusively for offshore missions, is equipped with AM 39 Exocet missiles and torpedoes. Meanwhile, the AS535 variant was intended to expand the French Army's fleet for combat search and rescue (CSAR) operations.

The AS532 Cougar has become an integral part of air forces worldwide and, since its introduction into service, has participated in combat operations in the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to France, it is also operated by Germany, Brazil, Spain, and Saudi Arabia.
