SAAB Power flypast: the history and present of Saab jets

15.09.2021, 15:47

As a special part of the program, Saturday will be closed by the flight of six jet engines from the workshop of Saab, the general partner of the NATO Days in Ostrava, and the ACR Air Force Days. The flight will be attended by aircraft of the Swedish Historical Flight – Tunnan, Draken, Viggen – and Gripen from all European users.

"We have a long-standing partnership with Saab. The cooperation dates back to 2007, and our mutual cooperation contributed to our development in the largest security show in Europe. Saab is now the general partner of our event again and also will be next year," recalls Zbyněk Pavlačík, Chairman of Jagello 2000. "Six machines manufactured by this company will take part in a dynamic demonstration, and we decided to take this opportunity to show this manufacturer together in one flypast."

The J29F Tunnan, SK35C Draken, and AJS37 Viggen from the Swedish Historical Flight unit represent the development of Swedish aeronautical engineering during the Cold War. During this period, to maintain its neutrality, Sweden had a very strong air force (in the fifties even the fourth strongest in the world) while uniquely adhering to domestic constructions.

The current peak of this development series of single-engine jets, JAS-39 Gripen, is used by three European countries - Sweden, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. As a result, intensive cooperation is taking place between these countries. Joint training in Sweden, as well as side-by-side training in international exercises, create strong ties between the pilots of these countries. Outside Europe, the Gripen aircraft is used by the air forces of South Africa, Thailand, and Brazil.

Saab is one of the world's leading defense technology suppliers and is best known in the Czech Republic for its JAS-39 Gripen fighters, which have successfully helped the Czech Air Force fulfill its tasks for fifteen years. However, the company's portfolio also includes many other top products, services, and solutions from military technologies to civil security. For example, Saab supplied the Czech Army with the RBS 70 anti-aircraft defense system and its latest generation, the RBS 70 NG, or the Arthur artillery radar.
