Unfavourable weather did not dissuade 45,000 visitors

The first day of record-breaking NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days was visited by 45,000 people, who came to the Leos Janacek Ostrava Airport to see participants and equipment from 20 countries and NATO. Visitors had a chance to witness the richest programme of dynamic displays and widest presentation of military and security equipment on static displays in the history of the show, many exclusive premieres and over 100 aircraft.

“This year’s NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days prepared a really unforgettable show for its visitors. The event proved again that it offers new displays each year and now is the list of premieres and records quite long,” stresses Zbyněk Pavlačík, Chairman of Jagello 2000. “We are glad that despite the rainy weather all visitors, fans of aviation, military or other security service, could find their favourite display or exposition.”

Italian aerobatic team Frecce Tricolori with ten airplanes was the main highlight of the programme in the air. Rain and clouds couldn’t spoil the presentation of pilots’ skills in group flying.

Static display area is completely full. For the first time in event’s history, two US strategic bombers, B-1B and B-52, dominate the aircraft statics. Those are accompanied by NATO’s E-3A AWACS, US KC-135 tanker, German and Norwegian P-3C Orions, or Swedish KC-130 tanker. Moreover, German transport plane A-400M is participating at its Czech premiere. Third participation in a row of US tilt rotor aircraft CV-22B Osprey is also unique.

Aviation fans can appraise presentation of rarely seen small aircraft, for example British Royal Navy Hawk. Meeting of Eurofighter Typhoons of all five its European operators is historical moment by itself. In total 13 Typhoons landed at the Mosnov airport – five for flying displays, four for statics, and the rest are spare ones.

Germany, this year’s Special Partner Nation, prepared its biggest presentation in the history of the Czech Republic, or Czechoslovakia. It presents 15 aircraft and more than 50 pieces of ground equipment. Number of German participants is higher than number of all participants at the very first NATO Day in Ostrava in 2001. Germany showcases not only its military, but also Police, Customs Service, Red Cross, or Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW).
