Pay a visit to exhibition on EU training mission in Mali at NATO Days in Ostrava

For this year’s NATO Days in Ostrava and Czech Air Force Days, with a support Representation of European Commission in the Czech Republic we have prepared a photographic exhibition of the European Union training mission in Mali (EUTM).

On Malian request, European Union assists with training of troops under the command of the legitimate government, who are battling the radical Islamists and separatists in the north of the country. Nearly forty Czech soldiers also take part in the mission, mainly protecting the headquarters in the nation’s capital in the south of the country, but also directly taking part in the training of their Malian colleagues.

The exhibition is organised in main part by the Representation of the European Union in the Czech Republic, Ministry of Defence and 7^th Mechanised Brigade which will also put its Iveco LMV light armoured vehicle on display at the place of the exhibition in centre of the event venue. The vehicle helps protect Czech soldiers during the mission along with other fully-equipped LR130 Kajman vehicles. It is also owing to them that our soldiers perform an excellent service, improving stability of Mali, of its wider region and, by extension, also the European stability and security.

EU mission in Mali is a non-combat mission, aimed primarily at troops training. Main reason for the deployment of European forces to Mali was the conflict between al-Qaeda-connected Islamist radicals and government forces which resulted in a displacement of thousands of civilians within Mali and to its neighbouring countries.

Training of local forces therefore aims at resolving the underlying causes of the conflict in the place of conflict. In a spirit of its common security and defence policies, European Union has undertaken over 30 foreign civilian and military operations dedicated to improving the security and post-conflict development of the country and of its region, but also of the wider Sahel and the Middle East regions.
