LOM PRAHA to present new aircraft L-39 Skyfox and Z-242 L Zeus
This year again, visitors to NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days can look forward to the presentation of one of the event’s partners, the state enterprise LOM PRAHA. As part of a unique modernization exhibition, it will showcase the future of the Aviation Training Centre in Pardubice.
After years of planning, a turning point has arrived, marking the gradual farewell to the legendary L-39 C Albatros and Z-142C AF aircraft, which have faithfully served for 21 years. This represents a dual transformation, or rearmament, with new-generation machines: the jet-powered Aero L-39 Skyfox and the propeller-driven ZLIN Z-242 L Zeus and Z-143LSi Genius.
A total of four "Sky Foxes" are already in operation at the CLV in Pardubice, with a decision on an option for additional units to be made within the next few days. Production of the new Zlín aircraft is already underway, and the first three machines will land at Pardubice Airport in mid-October 2025. Interested parties will be able to see the new jet and propeller training platform for the first time as part of a static exhibition on the modernization of the Czech Armed Forces, in identical camouflage coloring.
The L-39 Skyfox and the new generation of ZLIN aircraft represent a crucial step in the training of Czech Army Air Force pilots and students of the University of Defence. The Skyfox, designed for both basic and advanced training of future F-35 pilots, features modern avionics, composite materials, and integrated fuel tanks, resulting in lower costs and longer range. With a heads-up display, HOTAS system, and realistic 3D terrain visualization, it ensures maximum comfort even under demanding conditions. A key advantage is its integration with a virtual training system, enabling simulation of complex combat scenarios directly in the cockpit.
The ZLIN aircraft are also part of the training system, combining the tradition of Czech aviation with the latest technologies and meeting international IFR standards. The Z-143 model is ideal for multi-crew training, while the Z-242 is suited for aerobatics and advanced training. Students of the University of Defence complete between 50 and 100 flight hours on the ZLINs from their second to fourth year, followed by 50 hours on jet-powered Skyfoxes, supplemented by 30 percent of training on the L-39NG simulator. This simulator was implemented in the new simulation facility at Pardubice Airport by VR Group, a subsidiary of LOM PRAHA. The entire system thus provides comprehensive preparation for service in combat aviation in accordance with the standards of both the Czech Air Force and EASA.
LOM PRAHA is a state-owned enterprise founded on June 30, 1989, and based in Malešice, Prague. It operates in the Czech defense aviation industry and was founded by the Ministry of Defense. Its main activities include the modernization, maintenance, and servicing of helicopter systems, particularly Mil family technology, including personnel training and the expansion of avionics, communications, and weapon systems. It continues an aviation tradition dating back to 1915 and is gradually expanding into foreign markets, while continuing its traditional cooperation with the Czech Army.
