The Military History Institute will bring the Italian SPA TL 37 artillery tractor

14.08.2025, 11:06

This year's NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days will not forget history lovers. Visitors can look forward to an artillery tractor from the collection of the Military History Institute in Prague, which was inspired by this year's partner country.

Before World War II, self-propelled guns were almost non-existent, so artillery tractors were an important element in the logistical support of artillery from a military-strategic point of view. It was precisely for this purpose that the TL 37 tractor was developed by the Italian company SPA in 1937. Thanks to its design, it excelled in traversing difficult terrain, which was particularly important for operations in mountainous or desert areas where Italian army units were deployed.

"The Military History Institute adapted its presentation with regard to the fact that this year's special partner country is Italy," comments Zbyněk Pavlačík, chairman of the Jagello 2000 association and main organizer of the event. "The presentation of this machine offers viewers not only the opportunity to see an unusual exhibit, but also a historical excursion into the engineering capabilities of Italian technical schools and a symbolic connection to the theme of this year's event."

A dynamic presentation of the tractor will offer visitors a unique opportunity to see the machine in motion and appreciate its innovative design features, including four-wheel drive, independent wheel suspension, and a relatively low center of gravity. The TL 37's high mobility allowed for effective deployment of artillery even where other vehicles would fail. Despite its compact dimensions, it was capable of towing light and medium cannons, thereby increasing the tactical mobility of units in the field. A static display will allow visitors to take a detailed look at and learn more about the technical features of the vehicle, which at the time of its creation represented the backbone of artillery units.
