The Lithuanian Air Force will arrive with its largest aircraft

07.09.2021, 10:11

After last year's break, the Lithuanian Air Force will present its largest aircraft at the NATO Days and the Czech Air Force Days – C-27J Spartan. Visitors will be able to see it as part of static presentation.

Lithuania is a regular participant in NATO Days, where it will participate for the seventh time in a row omitting the last year's break, "says Zbyněk Pavlačík, Chairman of Jagello 2000." The Spartan transport aircraft is also a normal participant, often in several aircraft. This year there will be only one Spartan and we owe to the Lithuanian Air Force to have it here. "

Change: Participation of the Lithuanian Air Force was cancelled (13th September 2021).

The C-27 Spartan aircraft is manufactured by the Italian company Leonardo. This twin-engine medium-range turboprop high wing aircraft can carry up to 60 soldiers. It excels in low requirements for the take-off and landing area regarding its length and quality. Lithuania operates a total of three machines of this type. It is also used by the Italian, American, Slovak, and Peruvian air forces. In addition to the standard transport version, specialized variants have also been developed for naval patrols, search and rescue, fire support, and electronic warfare.

Considering the size of Lithuania in the context of the North Atlantic Alliance, the Lithuanian Air Force is one of the smaller ones. Therefore, it retains only a certain range of capabilities, especially transport and helicopter aviation. It also operates L-39 jets manufactured in the Czech territory. Still, the protection of the airspace of all Baltic states is provided by other members of the NATO within the Baltic Air Policing mission. In 2009, 2012, and 2019, the Czech Republic helped with its four JAS-39 Gripen jets. Czech soldiers from 25th Air Defense Missile Regiment and the 53rd Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare Regiment are currently deepening defense cooperation by their presence in Lithuania.
